A letter from the director
CPE prepares individuals with interfaith professional training to provide pastoral care in a variety of settings. This community- based program uses an adult learning model. Trainees learn through practical training, reflection, and group feedback how to read the “living human document,” make pastoral diagnoses, and provide appropriate spiritual care with today’s religious landscape in mind.
A particular unit of CPE (400 hours) of clinical field training may help a new seminary graduate or chaplaincy student establish pastoral identity or prepare a lay person to assist with pastoral visits. A unit of CPE invites any helping professional to look at care from a spiritual perspective or helps a pastor of many years deepen his/her skills. Through clinical site work, active participation in peer review and consultation, individual supervision and reflective work, trainees develop deep awareness of self as chaplain and spiritual caregiver.
